Found in King County, Bellevue is located on Lake Washington, across from Seattle. Sometimes referred to as a satellite city or a suburb, Bellevue draws its name from the French term "belle vue". This translates as "beautiful view."
As of the 2020 census, Bellevue has a population of 151,854. This was an increase from the 2010 census figure of 122,363.
While settlers first appeared in the area in 1869, it was not until 1879 that what was considered the first permanent settlers arrived in the area. Logging provided the first industry in the area, followed by farming. Bellevue had gained a reputation as a weekend getaway destination for Seattle residents by the early years of the 20th century.
After an official incorporation in 1953, the city began to diversify. Today, it's home to more than 1300 business headquarters, providing employment opportunities for more than 45,000 people. Chief among these businesses is technology companies. USA Today named Bellevue as the second-best place to live for 2014.
